چکیده

Recent trends in German life expectancy show a considerable increase. Most of this increase has resulted from decreasing mortality at older ages. Patterns of oldest old mortality (ages 80+) differed significantly between men and women as well as between East and West Germany. While West German oldest old mortality decreased since the mid 1970s, comparable decreases in East Germany did not become evident until the late 1980s. Yet, the East German mortality decline accelerated after German reunification in 1990, particularly among East German females, attesting to the plasticity of human life expectancy and the importance of late life events. Medical care, individual economic resources and life-style factors are discussed as potential determinants of the decline in old age mortality in Germany. 1 Department of Social Policy, London School of Economics, Houghton Street, London WC2A 2AE,UK; Phone: +44-171-955-7663; Fax: +44-171-955-6833; Email: [email protected] 2 Max Planck Institute for Demographic Research, Doberaner Str. 114, D-18057 Rostock, Germany Phone: +49-381-2081-161; Fax: +49-381-2081-461; Email: [email protected] 3 Max Planck Institute for Demographic Research, Doberaner Str. 114, D-18057 Rostock, Germany Phone: +49-381-2081-152; Fax: +49-381-2081-452; Email: [email protected] Demographic Research Volume 3, Article 1 http://www.demographic-research.org/Volumes/Vol3/1/ 12 July 2000

Estimating the contribution of mortality selection to the East–West German mortality convergence

BACKGROUND Before German reunification, old-age mortality was considerably higher in East Germany than West Germany but converged quickly afterward. Previous studies attributed this rapid catch-up to improved living conditions. We add to this discussion by quantifying for the first time the impact of mortality selection. METHODS We use a gamma-Gompertz mortality model to estimate the contribu...

Maternal mortality in the former east Germany before and after reunification: changes in risk by marital status.

This paper examines the impact of marital status on maternal mortality in the period before and the period after German reunification in the area covered by the former East Germany. Maternal mortality ratio prior to the reunification was stable and declined after reunification. This can be attributed to the adoption of a lenient reporting system from West Germany. Unmarried status, on the othe...

Health Convergence Between East and West Germany as Reflected in Long-Term Cause-Specific Mortality Trends: To What Extent was it Due to Reunification?

The sizeable mortality gap between the German Democratic Republic (East Germany) and the pre-unified Federal Republic of Germany (West Germany) narrowed rapidly after the two states were unified. Despite extensive research, the mechanisms underlying the convergence process are still not fully understood. Significant changes to coding practices and the system of data collection introduced in Eas...

The importance of regional availability of health care for old age survival - Findings from German reunification

BACKGROUND This article investigates the importance of regional health care availability for old age survival. Using German reunification as a natural experiment, we show that spatial variation in health care in East Germany considerably influenced the convergence of East German life expectancy toward West German levels. METHOD We apply cause-deleted life tables and continuous mortality decom...

Regional variation and time trends in mortality from ischaemic heart disease: East and West Germany 10 years after reunification.

STUDY OBJECTIVE Within Europe, a pronounced geographical gradient of mortality from ischaemic heart disease has been observed with the highest burden in the north east and the lowest in the south west. The study objective was to compare mortality from ischaemic heart disease between former East and West Germany since reunification. DESIGN Analyses of age standardised mortality rates from isch...
